Wrangler Wednesday: All-new 2018 Jeep® Wrangler features backup camera

The all-new 2018 Jeep® Wrangler takes drivers forward into new and unchartered trails, and for the first time, the iconic vehicle comes with a standard ParkView rear backup camera to give drivers a view of what is behind them.

But how did FCA designers add a backup camera without radically altering the look of the vehicle and preserving the rear-mounted spare tire?

“On the Jeep Wrangler, where we mounted the camera was a big consideration,” said Thomas McCarthy, Head of Product Safety & Product Analysis FCA US. “The Wrangler always has a rear-mounted spare tire and we wanted to make sure we had the camera mounted in a position where, regardless of the wheel and tire package, the camera functionality would not be obscured.”

The backup camera on the all-new Wrangler mounts in the center of the rear spare carrier and is covered in a metal, tube-like structure to protect the camera. Additionally, a rear camera cover provides additional protection and locks the tire to the carrier.

The camera provides a wide-angle view of the area immediately behind the vehicle. Dynamic grid lines aid the driver when maneuvering into parking spaces or narrow areas. The camera image displays on the navigation screen when the transmission is shifted into reverse.

Hello from the Motor City! I’m Edward Cardenas and I’m multimedia editor for Stellantis. As a lifelong Detroiter, I have been surrounded by the automotive industry. I’ve had members of my immediate and extended family work in the industry. I’ve covered it as a journalist and advocated for it as a communications professional. I have also experienced the thrills of the industry while riding in a race car at nearly 200 miles per hour. Having this breadth of experience, I look forward to drawing upon my experiences to bring a wide range of stories, photos and videos about Chrysler, FIAT and Alfa Romeo to Stellantis Digital Media. When I’m not covering my brands, I’m spending time with my wife and two boys.
