Minivan Monday: All-new Chrysler Pacifica sweeps hometown newspaper honors

In metro Detroit, the hometown of FCA US LLC, there are two major newspapers, each featuring a staff that covers the automotive industry.

These reporters and columnists at the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News thoroughly review new cars and trucks that are introduced, and choose the best vehicles auto makers have to offer.

This year the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica swept the awards from both papers.

The Detroit Free Press named the Pacifica its Utility Vehicle of the year, and The Detroit News selected the minivan as its Vehicle of the Year.

Free Press Auto Critic Mark Phelan said the Pacifica “makes its case for being the perfect family vehicle by adding kid-friendly new features to the backseat and offering many parents the opportunity to go gasoline-free with a plugin hybrid model.”

In calling the Pacifica the “the best of the best,” Detroit News Auto Critic Henry Payne stated it has changed the “uncool, boxy image” of the minivan.

“(The) Pacifica blew away the stereotype by not only redefining the minivan, but making one of the most attractive, tech-savvy family haulers on the road today,” Payne wrote.

Both auto critics cited the all-new Pacifica’s design, technology and fuel efficiency in their praise of the vehicles.

These honors are the latest for the Chrysler Pacifica, the most awarded minivan of the year.

The Chrysler Pacifica minivan was named North American Utility Vehicle of the year at the North American International Auto Show.

Among the recent awards the Pacifica has received are the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year and Cars.com Best of 2017.

It’s not just automotive journalists who are praising it. According to Payne, he took the Pacifica to his nephew’s first-grade class for a Stow ‘n Go show ‘n tell. He said, “The kids raved about it.”

Hello from the Motor City! I’m Edward Cardenas and I’m multimedia editor for Stellantis. As a lifelong Detroiter, I have been surrounded by the automotive industry. I’ve had members of my immediate and extended family work in the industry. I’ve covered it as a journalist and advocated for it as a communications professional. I have also experienced the thrills of the industry while riding in a race car at nearly 200 miles per hour. Having this breadth of experience, I look forward to drawing upon my experiences to bring a wide range of stories, photos and videos about Chrysler, FIAT and Alfa Romeo to Stellantis Digital Media. When I’m not covering my brands, I’m spending time with my wife and two boys.
