MINIVAN MONDAY: Chrysler gains minivan market share

Minivans from FCA US are bucking a trend in the industry.

U.S. minivan unit sales are down 14% this year, marked by double-digit decreases by FCA’s competitors in the segment.

During the same period, minivan sales were up 1% for FCA US, according to an article by Seeking Alpha.

“When the whole market is down 3%, and your chief minivan competitors are down 18%, 30%, and 29%, being up 1% is outright heroic,” the article stated.

Between the Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country, FCA sold 111,316 minivans in the U.S.

FCA’s minivan market share has also increased compared to the same period last year. During the first five months of 2016, FCA held 45% of the U.S. minivan market share, the article stated. One year later, the market share increased to 52%.

“In the automotive industry, that’s one giant leap for mankind,” declared the article.

May sales of the all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica – the most awarded minivan of 2016 and 2017 – were up 325% in May, compared with the same month a year ago. It also was the minivan’s best sales month since it was launched last year.

In addition to strong sales in 2017, the Pacifica continues to receive awards, including Best Three-row Family Car honors at the Family Car Challenge hosted by the Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association in May.

Hello from the Motor City! I’m Edward Cardenas and I’m multimedia editor for FCA US. As a lifelong Detroiter, I have been surrounded by the automotive industry. I’ve had members of my immediate and extended family work in the industry. I’ve covered it as a journalist and advocated for it as a communications professional. I have also experienced the thrills of the industry while riding in a race car at nearly 200 miles per hour. Having this breadth of experience, I look forward to drawing upon my experiences to bring a wide range of stories, photos and videos about Chrysler, FIAT and Alfa Romeo to FCA Digital Media. When I’m not covering my brands, I’m spending time with my wife and two boys.
