MINIVAN MONDAY: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica offers 360-degree views

Four strategically placed cameras on the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica give drivers a view that’s not available with their two eyes: 360-degree vision.

For the first time in the FCA US lineup, Pacifica drivers can utilize an available 360-degree Surround View camera that provides a bird’s eye perspective of the vehicle and its surroundings.

The 360-degree camera is one of more than 100 available safety and security features available on the Chrysler Pacifica. The Surround View camera provides drivers a unique view of their surroundings on minivan’s 8.4-inch touchscreen in the center console.

How does this system work?

The system is activated when the driver shifts the Chrysler Pacifica into reverse, but can also be selected from the apps screen. It takes images captured from cameras located in the front grille, rear liftgate and side mirrors, and then stitches them together for a 360-degree view around the minivan.

The 360-degree overhead and rear views, which are the default views of the system, are displayed on the minivan’s center console touchscreen. Drivers can also select different camera views, including front and rear cross path views.

Once the minivan’s speed exceeds 8 mph, or when the driver shifts out of reverse for more than 10 seconds, the system deactivates. It also deactivates when the driver shifts into park or pushes the “X” button on the screen while the vehicle is in park, neutral or drive.

While the 360-degree camera provides a view around the minivan, drivers should also use their mirrors and own eyes to carefully check their surroundings before backing up.

The 360-degree Surround View camera feature is available on the Pacifica Touring-L Plus and Limited models. All other 2017 Chrysler Pacifica models come with a standard Parkview rear back-up camera.

Hello from the Motor City! I’m Edward Cardenas and I’m multimedia editor for Stellantis. As a lifelong Detroiter, I have been surrounded by the automotive industry. I’ve had members of my immediate and extended family work in the industry. I’ve covered it as a journalist and advocated for it as a communications professional. I have also experienced the thrills of the industry while riding in a race car at nearly 200 miles per hour. Having this breadth of experience, I look forward to drawing upon my experiences to bring a wide range of stories, photos and videos about Chrysler, FIAT and Alfa Romeo to Stellantis Digital Media. When I’m not covering my brands, I’m spending time with my wife and two boys.
